Home destroyed by fire at 1223 S. Washington in Wellington Monday evening
Sumner Newscow report — A house owned by Michael Hollman at 1223 S. Washington caught on fire Monday evening. The estimated loss to the fire was $27,000. There were no injuries. The cause of the fire is unknown and is currently under investigation.
At 8:13 p.m., Wellington Fire/EMS responded to a reported large structure on fire. Upon arrival, the two-story dwelling had heavy fire conditions with a front commercial addition.
Three hose lines and a deck gun were used to suppress the fire. The blaze moved from the first floor to the second and into the attic space of the structure.
Firefighters were on the scene for 2 1/2 hours suppressing the fire and conducting an “overhaul,” checking for hidden fires in the walls and ceiling of the structure. The structure is a total loss due to heavy fire and smoke damage.
Mutual aid was provided by Fire District 9, Mayfield, and Oxford. Other agencies assisting were the Wellington Police, Wellington Electric, and Kansas Gas.
There were 22 fire personnel on the scene.
