J.J. Cabrera killed after jumping from car during police chase in Texas

Jeremy Cabrera

Sumner Newscow report — J.J. Cabrera, 29, of Wellington, was killed in a car accident in rural Deaf Smith County, in northwest Texas on Sept. 22.

According to Deaf Smith County Sheriff J. Dale Butler, Cabera suffered fatal injuries during a police chase west of Hereford, Texas. He allegedly jumped out of the vehicle at a high rate of speed. He was killed instantly, according to Butler.

There were passengers in the car at the time. No one else was hurt in the incident.

Butler said there was a robbery in Potter County, which contains the community of Amarillo. Cabrera and the group then stole a 2006 Dodge pickup and headed westbound. Deaf Smith is located directly west of Potter County. The police started to pursue Cabera, who was allegedly driving. They were in the rural western part of the county before Cabrera jumped from the vehicle, Butler said. The pickup veered into a field and came to a stop.

Cabrera had periodically been in trouble with the law. He was charged with 12 counts of burglary stemming from auto thefts in 2016. He was recently charged with two felony counts of aggravated battery and criminal threat on Sept. 18 concerning an altercation with his stepfather. He was accused of using the knives to threaten and then causing cuts to Wilkinson’s head behind his ear.

Butler said the sheriff’s report is not complete, but he will be submitting it to the Deaf Smith County Attorney sometime next week for possible charges. He would not reveal who else or how many people were in the car at the time of the fatality.
