Joyce Tencleve, 91, Mayfield: Sept. 18, 1931 – Dec. 23, 2022 (updated with service information)
Joyce Arlene Tencleve, age 91, died on Friday, December 23, 2022, at Wellington Health & Rehab.
She was born in her rural Mayfield home on September 18, 1931, to Leonard and Leveta (Brittain) Mortimer.
Joyce graduated in 1949 from Milan High School with her sister Joann, brother Keith, and 10 other classmates. She reminded her kids and grandkids that she was “A Milan Star” as she was a basketball team member.
On February 20, 1953, Joyce and Bernard Tencleve were wed at the First Christian Church in Wellington. They celebrated 67 years of marriage before Bernard’s passing on October 12, 2020. Alzheimer’s stole her from us, and she has lived with assisted care since 2016.
Joyce was a dedicated farm wife, an employee of Etter’s Auto while Juddy was serving overseas, and later in life enjoyed working at Dwight’s Men’s Wear. Joyce was a great cook and in general, a hard-working woman who didn’t know the meaning of slowing down or taking a break. She always said, “It’s a sin to be idle and hard work never hurts anybody”! She worked countless hours in her yard and cooked meals for “her guys” until her health did not allow it. She was a faithful member of the Mayfield Federated Church and was involved in anything going on in the community of Mayfield.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband Bernard “Juddy”, her parents Leonard and Leveta, brothers Jack and Keith, her sister Joann Morris and her grandson JR Metzen. Survivors include her children, Dennis and wife Mindy of Mayfield, Linda and husband Ronnie Metzen of Mayfield, Debbie and husband Rob Dorsey of Wichita, and Barbara Shannon of Mayfield. Grand children, Kristy Jenkins and husband Josh of Greeley, CO, Jed Tencleve and wife Shelby of Mayfield, Chrystal Metzen of Lee’s Summit, MO, Nathan Metzen and wife Lyndsey of Wellington, Nikki San Roman and husband Teo of Wichita, Jennifer Metzen of Wellington, Robin Dorsey-Anderson and husband David of Park City, Mike Dorsey of Park City, Melodie Heberly and husband Wade of Montrose, CO and Torin Shannon of Montrose, CO. Sister Doris Wedge of Norman, OK and brother Dan Mortimer of Carthage, MO, 20 great grandchildren also survive as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Memorial services for Joyce will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 14, 2023 at the Mayfield Federated Church. Following memorial services, a Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. in the Mayfield Community Building.
Memorials can be made to the Mayfield Federated Church or Mayfield Community Center. Contributions can be mailed or left with the funeral home.
The family would like to thank the staff at Wellington Health & Rehab for their excellent care that was given to our loved one.
