Justin Bruns becomes Duke of Wellington, varsity Crusaders lose, scoreboard fetches big bucks!
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Justin Bruns was crowned the Duke of Wellington for 2013.
Bruns, decked out in a black sports coat, light blue shirt, and striped tie was crowned Friday evening during homecoming ceremonies.
Unfortunately, the two varsity basketball teams did not fare as well. The girls lost 36-33 and the boys fell 57-49 in varsity action against Mulvane.
Oh, and one of the old Wellington Middle School scoreboards was sold for a hefty price…
Bruns is crowned
Bruns was voted over four other Wellington High School Duke candidates: Loren Farley, Andrew Linnebur, Brian Peck and Alex Weiss.
Bruns is the son of Jason and Anna Bruns. He attends Wellington Free Will Baptist Church. He has participated in wrestling for four years. Outside of school he enjoys hanging out with friends, golfing, playing video games and long walks on the beach.
He was listed as honorable mention in wrestling. In the future, he plans on attending college and is considering pole vaulting while in college. He was escorted by Megan Campbell.
Scoreboard soldÂ
The first of two old WMS (and WHS 10 years before that) scoreboards sold for a surprisingly high price.
Wellington’s own fishing and hunting extraordinaire Brady Walker bought it for $700.
“No I honestly didn’t think it would go for that kind of money,” said Wellington High School principal Dale Adams said. “I was pleasantly surprised.”
Brady, who is married to optometrist Wendy Walker, said he’s going to put it in his basement or maybe the back yard.
“Hell, I didn’t even know it was being sold,” he said. “I looked at it and said ‘that would look good in my basement.'”
Varsity girls: Mulvane 36 Wellington 33
The Wellington girls lost a heart breaker to Mulvane Friday night. Wellington led 7-5 in the first quarter and held a 19-11 advantage at the half.
Wellington was extremely cold in the second half and that cost the Dukes down the stretch. Mulvane is now 10-4. Wellington dropped to 9-5. This could be a bad loss when it comes to seeding for the regional.
