Kansas Jayhawks win the National Championship, and many Sumner County residents celebrate

Sumner Newscow report — Whether it is one of your favorite bankers, an alumnus coming home to live in Wellington, or just a long-standing fan of that funny-looking bird, the sun is shining brightly this morning (even if it is quite cloudy). The Kansas Jayhawks won the National Championship in the NCAA Basketball tournament.

Kansas defeated North Carolina 72-69 to win its first championship since 1988. KU now has four of them. It didn’t look like it was going to happen. The Jayhawks were down 15 at halftime and trailed 16 at one point Monday night.  But KU came back to take the lead midway through the second half and won in a dramatic fashion.

While Mass Street was awash in revelers, 70,000 of them according to estimates (some sure to be Sumner County residents), Washington Street in Wellington was rather quiet. But that didn’t mean there were plenty of happy people around the area.

It has been quite a run for “Championships” in the Kansas area in the past seven years. The Kansas Royals won the Major League Baseball World Series in 2015, the Kansas City Chiefs won the NFL Super Bowl in 2020, and now the Jayhawks. Kind of a good area to be a sports fan at the moment – unless you hate local celebrations.

In the meantime, we will reveal the Dore/Cow Bracketbuster contest winner shortly.
