Lannie Taylor named as the ‘last’ ward city councilman to be sworn in

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Here is a trivia question that might get you a victory in a local trivia contest.

Who will be the last city council to be sworn in representing a ward in Wellington, Kansas?

If you answer, Lannie Taylor, then go collect whatever winnings you will get for answering the question correctly.

Taylor was named to the Wellington City Council in ward 3 to replace Jon Holmes, who moved to Colorado — you know the state that just passed legalizing marijuana.

Come next January the Wellington City Council will be going to at-large positions, doing away with the ward representation. Two city councilmen have been elected to represent the four wards making up an 8-member board.

Now Wellington is going to elect six city councilmen at large in one city election. We’ll delve in more detail as it gets closer to implementing the new election process.

Taylor was appropriately sworn in on Election Day. He had run against Holmes in March during the city election.

In other city news, the council:

•approved IRB funding for hotel development;

• authorized the mayor to sign an engineering services agreement with Smith and Oakes of Arkansas city for the design of the Lincoln Street paving and drainage improvement projects for $54,500;

• approved the purchase of a fabric round top structure for the street department from Thompson Construction of Winfield for a Britespan Fabrick Round top structure for the street department for $16,233.02;

• approved the purchase of transformers from Stanion Wholesale Electric Company, Inc. for $46,909.89.
