Library plans kickoff party for ‘Libraries Rock’ themed summer reading program

by Amber Schmitz, Sumner Newscow —  “Libraries Rock” is the theme for this year’s Summer Reading Program, and the Wellington Public Library has many activities planned for all ages.

To kick off the summer reading program, a party will be held on the library lawn, Thursday, May 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. D.J. Kenny Ault from 100.3, The Wave will be broadcasting live from the library. There will be games, music, food, and a chance to sign up for the great summer programs they have to offer.

Kids are encouraged to read all summer long, and to log their minutes and titles. Prizes, including a pool party, will be given to participants.

The Juggle Whatever Duo will perform a glow in the dark show with a workshop following on Friday, June 8, at 10 a.m.

Dan Dan the Magic Man will perform a one hour show combining magic and a love of music, on Friday, June 15 at 10 a.m. at the high school.

The Little Readers Story Time will be held Wednesdays at 10 a.m. for ages 0-5. This will be a musical themed story and activity hour.

Grade school workshops will be held Tuesdays at 10 a.m. This will involve weekly, hour-long programs with a musical guest, craft, game or activity.

From 11:15 a.m.-12 p.m., Monday-Friday, a free sack lunch, provided by U.S.D. 353, will be served in the library meeting room for ages 0-18, through the month of June.

The Tween Book Club, for ages 10-14, will be held Mondays at 11:30 a.m. There will be three different book genres for kids to pick from each month. Sack lunch will be provided through June.

The Pokemon Club will be held Thursdays at 2 p.m. All ages are welcome to hang out weekly and share their love for everything Pokemon.

Teen Afterhours is a time for teens to hang out in the library after it closes and just be teens, on Thursdays at 8 p.m.

Free family movies will be shown every Friday at 2 p.m. in the community room. Popcorn will be served.

S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) Saturday events will be held June 9 and July 14 with musical themed science and technology experiments for all ages.

Many activities are also planned for adults, including reading logs, book reviews drawings and prizes through the end of July.

Mini concerts will be held to break up the silence around the library by local musicians and vocalists. Concerts will only be a few minutes in length, be spontaneous, and not advertised. Catch them while you’re visiting the library!

Musicals will be shown for free on Mondays at 2 p.m., such as “Showboat,” “Kiss Me Kate,” and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.” Popcorn will be served.

A songwriting workshop will be held Saturday, June 16 at 2 p.m. with local musicians Greg Ewing and Skeet Sirmons. Come and learn the process of songwriting. They will bring instruments and talk about the songwriting process.

A tour of Greenjeans Recording Studio, with Carter Green, is planned for July 12 at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Registration is required, as small groups of ten will be taken there at a time. To reach the recording studio, you must be able to climb stairs. Sign up at the library.

The adult book club books will also be centered around musical themes. June 19th’s book will be “The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto” by Mitch Albom, and July 17th’s book will be “Long Way Gone” by Charles Martin. Books are available in regular and large print at the adult circulation desk.

The library will end its summer reading program with a community-wide talent show on July 27 at 7 p.m. in Heritage Park. All are invited to showcase their talents in song, music, drama, dance and comedy. Talent show coaching to prepare for the big show will be held every Thursday at 4 p.m.
