Library to kick off ‘Build a Better World’ summer reading program

by Amber Schmitz, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington Public Library plans to “Build a Better World” in the community through its free annual summer reading program. For adults, young adults and kids of all ages, there are many activities planned, and all programs are free and open to the public, and will run from June 6-July 28.

This summer, the library is participating in the Summer Lunch Program through USD 353. A sack lunch will be provided for all kids Monday through Friday, 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. A super snack will be provided on Friday afternoons at 2 p.m.

Tuesday mornings at 10 a.m. will feature workshops for grades K-5, involving activities in STEM, reading and math. The workshops include structures, towers, bridges marble runs, maker program, robots and a cardboard challenge.

Wednesdays at 10 a.m., preschool storytime will be held, followed by an age appropriate activity.

Family day camps will be every other Thursday from 2-4 p.m., with Makerspace workshops, guest speakers, and fun projects for all ages. Camps lined up include an engineering challenge, making YouTube videos, family engineering challenge, and a family engineering project.

Free movies will be shown every Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the library meeting room. A super snack will be provided at 2 p.m. The movie line-up includes: Sing, Monster Trucks, Moana, A Dog’s Purpose, The Lego Batman, Rock Dog, Power Rangers, and Fantastic Beasts.

A Teen Library Lock-In, open to kids in grades 6-12, will be held Friday, June 2 at 7 p.m. through Saturday, June 3 at 9 a.m. There will be lots of great snacks, games and activities. Register today!

By registering in the summer reading program, participants receive a reading log to keep track of titles or time read, which they can turn in for a free book of their choice. Themed t-shirts are also available which participants can earn by completing a list of incentives.

There are also many programs planned for adults, including a rain barrel class, resource sharing fair, and instant pot program to be held at the Raymond Frye Complex.

Join the library staff at a Summer Reading Program Block Party and Kickoff on Thursday, May 25, 6-8 p.m. There will be games, contests, and each summer reading registrant will receive a cool bag of goodies. All ages may register.
