Marietta ‘Mary’ Metzen, Mayfield: July 7, 1931 – January 6, 2021
Marietta “Mary” Metzen, of Mayfield, died Wednesday, January 6, 2021, at the Wichita Presbyterian Manor in Wichita at the age of 89. She was born the daughter of Joseph and Martha (Bergkamp) Friess on July 7, 1931, in Colwich. On September 18, 1950, Mary and Eugene J. “Gene” Metzen were united in marriage in Conway Springs. Together they celebrated 54 years of marriage before his passing in 2005. Gene and Mary owned and operated Mayfield Grocery and Locker for many years before retiring and selling to their son. Mary was a member of St. Anthony St. Rose Catholic Church.
She loved her church and remained involved by serving in the Altar Society and volunteering at the Mission Thrift Shop where she often worked in the back ironing and cleaning. Mary faithfully prayed the Rosary in the evenings and encouraged her family to join her. She had many activities to keep her busy but is most remembered for her love of Bingo, playing cards, embroidering tea towels, and watching softball games at the Mayfield ballfield. Mary made certain her family knew they were loved and she will be missed by all that knew her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Metzen, brothers: Leroy and Paul Friess, and sisters: Jeanette Hilger and Betty Rausch.
Survivors include her daughter, Judy Ternes and husband Tom of Wichita; daughter, Debbie Heasty and husband Daryl of Mayfield; daughter, Diane Serrioz and husband Andy of Wellington; daughter, Jeanie Brotherton and husband Rick of Wichita; son, Steve Metzen and wife Jamie of Mayfield; daughter, Joan Miller and husband Dean of Wichita; daughter, Kristie Nedbalek and husband Troy of Wichita; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, sisters: Darlene Haukap and Doris Friess and a brother, Ron Friess and his wife Kim.
A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, January 10, 2021, with the family present from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. If attending, please adhere to the current public gathering guidelines by wearing a face mask.
A private Rosary and Funeral Mass will be held at St. Anthony St. Rose Catholic Church in Wellington. Interment will be held at the Osborne Cemetery, Mayfield.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be given to the Mayfield Community Center or the Knights of Columbus Building Fund. Contributions can be mailed or left with the funeral home.
