Mark Whitener
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington School Board named Mark Whitener as the new superintendent of USD 353.
The hire was made official today during a special meeting at the USD 353 Central Office.
Whitener is currently superintendent and principal at Oxford High School. He has served in that capacity for five years. Before that, Whitener served as the middle school principal at USD 470 in Arkansas City for two years, and the principal at IXL Elementary in Ark City for three years.
The Oxford School Board accepted his resignation on Monday morning and he announced it to his staff later in the day.Â
Whitener was one of three candidates who were interviewed the past two weeks by the school board which received a significant number of candidate applications for the position.
He will be replacing Wellington Superintendent Rick Weiss, who is retiring at the end of the 2015-16 school year. Whitener will start his tenure on July 1 when the 2016-17 school year begins.
