Matt Stalcup gets drafted by Oakland A’s in 9th round of Major League Baseball draft
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Matt Stalcup, a 2008 Wellington High School graduate, was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the ninth round — the 281st pick Friday afternoon in the 2013 Major League Baseball first-year player draft.
Stalcup played two seasons for the Pittsburg Gorillas, graduating in May. Listed as a 6-foot-2, 195 pound left-hand pitcher, he appeared in 14 games, including 12 starts, according to the Pittsburg State website. He posted a 7-6 record with a 3.74 ERA and one save in 77.0 innings of work.Â
He led the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association in strikeouts per nine innings pitched (10.75) and garnered honorable mention all-MIAA honors. He recorded a season-high 12 strikeouts in seven innings of work in a win vs. Sioux Falls on Feb. 27- allowing two or fewer earned runs in eight of his 12 starts.
He spent two seasons at Allen County Community College.
Stalcup was a second-team Kansas Class 4A All-State performer at Wellington High as a senior in 2008 – posting a 6-2 record with a .25 ERA his senior year.
