Mayfield Federated Church to hold Lord’s Acre Dinner & Auction, Nov. 12
Mayfield Lord’s Acre began in 1973 as a Fundraiser for the Mayfield Federated Church. It comes from the scripture verse of Exodus 23:19, “Bring the best of the firstfruits of your soil to the house of the Lord your God.†Rev. Ben Finley was the Pastor at that time. He started it as a means of teaching stewardship whereby we share our time, our talents, and our possessions with God.  He also emphasized the quality of our gifts. In the Old Testament, the offering of a lamb or bullock was without spot or blemish, representing the sinless Christ who was to come. This is observed by bringing only new things, raised or produced by our own labor.
The original program was started in the early 1920â€s in a farming community, asking the farmers to dedicate the first acre of their crop to a special fund for their Church. Rev. Finley asked us all, not just farmers, to give our “first fruits†of our labors. Since then we have always had a Quilt, hand quilted by the Women’s group of the Church, as well as many other hand-made items, such as furniture, blankets, baby quilts, clothing, craft items, and home-made cakes, candies, and pies.
The fall auction for this year is on November 12, 2016 at 7 p.m. There will also be a baked potato or sweet potato bar with lots of toppings from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
