(Update Friday, 2:45 p.m.) Mike Pompeo accepts Donald Trump’s offer as a CIA Director
Sumner Newscow report — Kansas Rep. Mike Pompeo has accepted President Elect Donald Trump’s offer as CIA director in his new administration, according to several media sources.
Pompeo is a three-term Republican from Wichita who represents Sumner County and the fourth district. He met this week with Trump, and given the lawmaker’s background on military and intelligence issues, it seemed likely that CIA director and Army secretary were two possibilities.
Pompeo became a U.S. Representative in 2010.
According to the Wichita Business Journal,  a special election will determine who fills the pending vacancy in Kansas’ 4th Congressional District.
Bryan Caskey, director of elections for the state of Kansas, told Josh Heck of WBJ when Pompeo officially resigns from Congress, Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback will have five days to call a special election, which must take place within 45 to 60 days of the resignation.
Caskey says the Democratic and Republican parties will then conduct congressional district conventions, through which one person per party will be selected as a nominee. Anyone filing a petition with enough signatures to represent 4 percent of the district’s registered voters can be added to the ballot as an independent candidate.
Caskey says those interested in being considered for the Democratic and Republican nominees should contact their respective organizations. The state won’t be involved in that process, Caskey says.
To have a Congressional vacancy, he says, is “a very rare occurrence.â€
The last vacancy in the House was in 1950.
The most recent U.S. Senate vacancy came in 1996 when then Sen. Bob Dole began his run for president. Brownback was ultimately elected to fill the remainder of Dole’s term.
