by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Wellington High School seniors Montel Tate and Malachi Rogers signed with Butler County Community College during National Signing Day.
Tate will play defensive back, while Rogers will play running back for the Grizzlies next fall.
The two players have been playing together growing up and admitted they wanted to play together at Butler.
Rogers is seated with his mother Stormy Garcia. Wellington head football coach Jeremiah Meeks and activities director Elly Johnson are standing.
“It’s a great program, and I liked the coaches,” Rogers said, who transferred to Wellington as a junior. “Butler has a reputation for developing DI players.”
Tate said the good connection with the coaches helped him make his decision over Coffeyville and other community colleges.
The two seniors helped Wellington to a 5-4 season. Rogers switched from quarterback to running back his senior year. He rushed for 1,315 yards on 186 carries and 15 touchdowns.
