Moundridge defeats Oxford 81-44 in battle of unbeatens and top 10 2A teams
Sumner Newscow report — In a battle between two Class 2A state basketball teams, Moundridge defeated Oxford 81-44 in a non-league game to open the 2024 version of the season.
Moundridge came into the game as the No. 4 team in the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association poll. Oxford was No. 5. It started out competitively early, with Oxford knocking down a couple of threes, and trailed just 12-10 midway through the first quarter.
But then Moundridge took off, taking a 29-12 first-quarter lead and upping the advantage to 56-21 at the half en route to a 37-point win. Oxford falls to 6-1 for the season.
“They defend at a very high level and disrupted our offense,” said Kyle Green, Oxford head boys basketball coach. “They are the defending Class 2A state champions and would not be shocked if they win it again.”
Moundridge was led by 6-3, 195-pound Bear Moddelmog, who scored 33 points. Kreighton Kanitz also poured in 20.
“Moddelmog is the definition of a franchise player,” Green said. “He’s an absolute stud. He shot the ball well, he moved without the ball well. He’s a pure scorer.”
Cayden Carpenter led Oxford with 15 points. Other scorers include Kellen Green 10, Sam Wheeler 7, Cordell Jordan 5, Jason Mercer 3, Connor Commerford 1, Anthony Williams 1.
The vacation is over for Oxford, which will need to regroup quickly when it travels to Sedan, the defending SCBL Champions and picked to win the league again.
“One thing I like about our team is they never get too high, and they never get too low,” Green said. “I know they will come back tomorrow afternoon ready to work and prepare for Sedan.”
