(Updated Oct. 28, 2 p.m.) Nathanael DeJarnett, 20, of Wellington killed in pedestrian-vehicle accident in Fort Smith, Ark.

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — There is additional information concerning the death of Nathanael DeJarnett, a 20-year-old from Wellington, who was killed in Fort Smith, Ark. when he was struck by a vehicle on a city street.

In a report published by the Fort Smith Times Record Online Edition, DeJarnett was killed early Sunday morning at North Greenwood Ave. and North J. Street there. DeJarnett was allegedly walking or crossing the roadway around 1 a.m. when he was hit by a 1992 Chevy pickup driven by Vicki L. Fielding of Fort Smith, Ark. according to Sgt. Waymon Parker of the Fort Smith Police Department.

The driver was turning left when the vehicle struck DeJarnett in the center left-turn lane of the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene. 

“We’re not sure who called the police, but there were witnesses,” Parker told the Times-Record.

Fielding, 51, was arrested at the scene by officer Jared Taylor around 1 a.m. on suspicion of reckless driving while intoxicated. The prosecuting attorney’s office will review Fielding’s case this week and determine whether to file charges.

DeJarnett is the son of George and Desi DeJarnett of Grove, Okla. who are originally from Wellington. George and his brother John opened an RV service in Grove.
