National Depression Glass Association Convention to be held in Wellington July 13-14

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Anywhere from 600 to 800 people from across the U.S. will be converging on Wellington for the annual National Depression Glass Association convention on July 13-14 running congruently with the Kansas Wheat Festival.

Dealers and exhibitors from as far away as New Jersey, West Virginia, Tennessee, Arizona and elsewhere will be on hand for the annual convention. Pam Meyer, media coordinator of the event, hopes to make it an annual event in Wellington.

“It is not by coincidence that this year’s convention is being held at the location of our national museum,” Meyer said. “Some of our members think we should spread our convention to other parts of the country. I’m going to do everything in my power to try to convince them this is the only place for this convention to be.”

The convention is officially running for two days, but NDGA members are expected to start arriving on Wednesday just in time for the Picnic in the Park where a tent for the membership will be awaiting.

The NDGA Display Show, open to the public, will be held on Saturday with a silent auction starting at 10 a.m. at the Wellington High School. The annual membership meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m.

The convention will feature two special guests: Barbara Mauzy, author of numerous glass referene books; and Craig Schenning, author of books on the Indiana Glass Company.

Mauzy has authored over 20 antique glass books. She will be reading her children’s book: Child of the Great Depression” at the Wellington Public Library on Friday at 10 a.m. for the children. Her biography can be found here: Barbara E Mauzy

Children ages 8-12 can also sign up for a seminar on how to make glass which will featured at four different times at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m on Thursday and Saturday. Children won’t actually be making glass but rock candy which is the same principle. Click hereGlass article, Leegh Wyse for full details on the seminar.

The NDGA has asked Project Prom to run a concession stand during their convention at the high school. Project Prom needs volunteers. Call Maria Cornejo at 316-461-0215 if you wish to help.
