No. 10 Oxford Wildcat boys are 2-0 with big win over Norwich
Sumner Newscow report — The Oxford boys basketball team is living up to its No. 10 preseason Kansas Basketball Coaches Association rankings. The Wildcats are 2-0 with a big 64-54 win over Norwich in the first round of the Border-Queen Tournament in Caldwell.
Oxford took a 12-9 first-quarter lead and expanded it to a 29-17 at the half to go on to a 10-point win. The Wildcats are 2-0.
Connor Commerford led all scorers with 17. Kellen Green had 14, while Cordell Jordan had 11. Other scorers were Sam Wheeler with 8, Cayden Carpenter 6, and Anthony Williams 4.
“What a great early season game,” said Kyle Green, Oxford’s head boys basketball coach. “Norwich is a well-coached team that goes after you on defense. I can’t say enough about our kids and how they competed.”
Green was very complimentary of Commerford, who came off the bench for his 17 points. He states:
“Norwich geared their defense for our perimeter game. They did a nice job of running Wheeler and Green off the three-point line, and Connor came in and took advantage of that. He stepped up in a big way.
Green did a nice job of attacking poor closeouts, got the rim, and finished. Same with Jordan. Senior Cayden Carpertner was such a calming influence for us tonight. He kept our young guys calm and crashed the boards well.:
Oxford earlier beat Fairfield on Friday 73-40. In that game, Wheeler scored 21 points while Green had 19 and Jordan had 14. Oxford hosts Argonia tonight.
