No quorum! Wellington City Council meeting cancelled when only 3 members showed up
by James Jordan, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington City Council did not have its regular meeting Tuesday night because not enough council members showed up. They did not have a quorum. City Manager Shane Shields told those present they could not meet.
There was no meeting for Mayor Shelly Hansel to call to order, so she explained there would be no meeting.
Council members Kelley Hawley and Kevin Dodds had notified the council earlier that they would not be in attendance. Council member Kip Etter replied to a message from one of the city staff that he was unable to be there.
That left Jim Valentine, Jennifer Heersche and Joe Soria. There must be four present to have a quorum.
Valentine has been on the council since 2007 and is the senior member. He said this has never happened before in the time he has been on the council.
There were no pressing items that had to be dealt with, so what was on the agenda will be carried over to the next meeting. There was one street closure requested for an event, and the city staff will take care of that.
“We can’t legally have a meeting,” Hansel said, and told those in attendance there would be no meeting.
