Only the finest from Toronto, the island, and another dimension on this week’s CultureCow

by Devin McCue, Sumner Newscow – Happy Friday. After a busy week of drinking beer, eating hotdogs, and shooting off fireworks (and if you read last week’s column, you know how I feel about all three), let’s have a relaxing weekend with some of the best pop-culture around.  We can start out with a new album from the undisputed king of the rap game, Drake.

Whether or not you like his music, you have to admit there isn’t another MC with the clout and cross over power that Drizzy possesses; a power he continues to flex with a multi-sided album, Scorpion, that features him rapping on the A side and switching it up to some smooth R&B on the B side.

While the A side has some clever rhymes and great one-offs like God’s Plan, I’m Upset, and Can’t Take a Joke (my personal favorite on the entire album), it’s the B side where Drake is at his finest.  You can tell immediately at the switch (which occurs after Is There More) that Drake steps up his game for the second act with a slow-paced, pulse thumping slow jam, the likes of we haven’t heard since Views.

Scorpion has a litany of stellar producers, but 40, one of Drake’s favorites produces the first two tracks on the B side and several more after that and shines as the best producer on the track with interesting samples and electronic elements squeezed seamlessly between some of his best work with 6-God.

As far as subject matter goes, Drake doesn’t step too far out of his comfort zone and talks about his struggles with his love life, but for the first time he actually takes ownership of the fact Pusha-T brought to life that he has a son and wants to be a better father.  Scorpion is by no mean Drake’s best work, but it’s a quality product that has some real gems scattered throughout that makes it too easy to throw on repeat and just vibe to.

In the wonderful world of cinema, one of the most historic of film franchises got another installment with the release of Jurassic World.  When I say “historic” I’m not exactly giving it a compliment either.  From the misguided disasters of the original sequels to today’s multi-million dollar marvels, Jurassic movies just can’t seem to capture the grandeur and captivating nature of the first Jurassic Park.

They can’t match the same intensity and simple yet intriguing plot that was so prevalent in Jurassic Park, but this film is probably the best or second-best attempt at it. It follows the man just dripping in swagger, Chris Pratt, as he and his love interest who’s so forgettable I won’t bother to IMDB her for this article as they attempt to save the dinosaurs from certain extinction on the hell-hole of an island they left them on in the first movie.

You know how a Jurassic movie evolves from there, dinosaurs escape and do what dinosaurs do best: eat people. The plot is one of the most fantastical and unbelievable in the series (in a series about dinosaurs, c’mon people!), but it’s also one of the most entertaining of the bunch.

You don’t go to a Jurassic World movie with the intention to come out with your life and way of thinking shattered, you go to watch Chris Pratt run with velociraptors and some of the best CGI in the business. So don’t go to this movie expecting a masterpiece, but go to it to be happily placated and entertained (they even brought Jeff Goldblum back for you).

This marks over 9 months without a new episode of Rick and Morty and if you’re like me, you’ve been keeping a count on your wall like prisoner.  But good news is here! No it’s not a new episode or else this part of the story would’ve led the article, but it is something to help bide your time while you painstakingly wait for Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland to grace us with one, the unofficial Rick and Morty podcast, Interdimensional RSS.

Interdimensional RSS has been around since before season 3 of the actual show started, but I haven’t got around to telling you until now, because Rick and Morty season 3 just dropped on Hulu (go watch it a couple times, then finish this article) and I’ve been jonesing for some new R&M action ever since.

The pod is hosted by two overly qualified R&M nerds as they interview writers, talk about some of the theories surrounding the show, and have an episode breakdown for every episode in season 3.  If you’re as big of a Rick and Morty geek as I am this is the podcast for you, and if you’re new to the show or have never seen it, first of all, go watch that like right now please you’ll never regret it, and secondly this show will give you a deep dive into all the lore and fandom this show commands.
