Oxford and South Haven basketball teams split the evening

Sumner Newscow report — Two Sumner County teams squared off in Oxford. It was a split decision. The Oxford boys won 68-60, while the South Haven girls triumphed 60-21.

In the boys’ game, Oxford got comfortably in front and then nearly collapsed in the fourth quarter.

Oxford opened with a 24-14 first-quarter lead and led 41-27. It was Oxford 62-40 at the end of three. But South Haven came back and outscored Oxford 20-4 to lose by a mere eight points.

Oxford head boys basketball coach Kyle Green states:

“South Haven kept scrapping against our younger guys when they got in and closed it to 8. Our older kids came back in to close it out. Massive credit to Coach Zane Aguilar and the South Haven kids. They continued to compete all night, they are well coached, and their kids played so dang hard for 32 minutes.

At the same time, massive credit to our kids; we’ve had a couple of tough games, Moundridge is a team that I think has a chance to go to state in 2A, and Sedan is just flat-out solid. We needed this one tonight. I thought our core rotation guys played really well for 3 quarters. We got back to doing what we need to do to be successful.”

Oxford has improved 6-3 overall and 1-0 in the South-Central Border League which started last night.
