Oxford beats Cedar Vale-Dexter 58-42 to take control of district
by James Jordan, Sumner Newscow — Oxford took control in the fourth quarter, and in the process took control of its district in 8-man football Friday night with a 58-42 win over Cedar Vale – Dexter.
Oxford is now 3-0 in its district and Cedar Vale -Dexter is now 2-1 with two games left.
But the game was close with both teams showing some fireworks at different times.
Oxford led 44-36 at the half after a wild second quarter that saw the Wildcats score 22 points and they appeared poised to pull away.
Oxford coach Shawn Burkes said he was happy with the way the offense operated, and how the offensive line opened holes for the runners.
“Defensively we still need to wrap up,†he said, adding they missed to many tackles especially in the third quarter.
Dalton Silhan carried the freight most of the game, rushing for 309 yards and 200 of that was in the first half. He had five touchdowns, scoring on runs of 52, 28, 26, six and four yards. He also had a 52 yard run from scrimmage that didn’t score.
Burks said Silhan has been the workhorse in recent games, and fellow running back Dylan Hills has been blocking very well.
Quarterback Callen Shimkus got the offense going early on with touchdown passes of 50 and seven yards to Tyler Vaughn in the first quarter.
Cedar Vale – Dexter answered those scores, as both teams scored on their first two possessions, Quarterback Thomas Parson passed 12 yards to Jacob Berkley for the first score, and Demetrius Adkins scored on a seen yard run later in the quarter to tie it at 14-14.
Oxford scored the first five times it had the ball and on six of seven first half possessions.
Halfway through the second quarter Oxford’s Tyler Vaughn intercepted a pass to stop a Cedar Vale – Dexter drive, and that allowed Oxford to get some separation.
Cedar Vale- Dexter scored as time ran out on a fourth and 1 at the goal line. Berkely scored to get the game closer before intermission.
Cedar Vale Dexter started the second half with a long drive and managed to cut the deficit to two at 44-42. A missed two-point conversion kept them from tying it.
The Spartans managed to stop Oxford, but could not take advantage.
The Wildcats scored on two of the next three possessions to pull away from there.
Oxford is now 5-2 overall, and plays next week at Flinthills, a team that has not won a game.
