Oxford boys survive overtime upset bid from Argonia… South Haven girls win

Sumner Newscow report — The Oxford boys and South Haven girls were victorious in South-Central Border League battles Friday night. We are still looking for scores and information on the Argonia vs. Oxford girls and Caldwell vs. South Haven boys.

Oxford 55 Argonia 52 (OT)

Oxford survived what was a closer-than-expected game against Argonia. Oxford’s Cordell Jordan made a huge rebound off a missed free throw with the game tied at the end of overtime. That allowed teammate Connor Commerford to put up a three-point opportunity on the other end. He was fouled and hit two free throws to secure the win.

Argonia had four players score in double figures to nearly pull off the SCBL upset. Argonia’s Maddox Hemberger put up 16 points. Other scorers were: Silas Boetcher 11, Carson Vineyard 11, and Manuel Fernandez 11.

The game was close throughout. Argonia led 8-7 at the end of the first quarter, with Oxford up 23-20 at the half. The Wildcats were up by four after three, before the Red Raiders outscored them 18-14 in the fourth to send the game into overtime. Argonia was held scoreless in overtime while Oxford hit three free throws.

“It was a rock fight kind of game,” said Kyle Green, Oxford head boys basketball coach. “Their kids and coaching staff did a great job, and they played their tails off. It was very physical. Just a battle between two teams competing their tails off.”

With the win, Oxford is now 11-2 on the season and 3-0 in the SCBL. Argonia is 0-3 and 2-10 overall.

Oxford was led by Jordan with 14. Other scorers were: Whitson 3, Commerford 10, Green 9, Wheeler 5, Ruyle 8 and Gatlin 4.

“We need to get healthy quickly as we have South Haven coming to town Tuesday,” Green said.
