Oxford goes into playoffs on hot streak; plays West Elk Tuesday
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — If someone was to ask at the beginning of the year which Sumner County team would end up being the only district champions here, it is doubtful many would have picked Oxford.
But here we are. Oxford is Sumner County’s lone district champion. The Wildcats rolled Central-Burden 46-0 Thursday night. It had already clinched the district championship last week. But this one was to put an exclamation point to a great regular season.
The Wildcats will now host West Elk Tuesday evening in the first round of the Class eight-man division 1 playoffs. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
Oxford has rattled off six straight games and was undefeated in its district. In the past two weeks, the Wildcats have outscored their opponents by a margin of 118-0.
Here’s some history for you. This is the first time in Oxford history that the Wildcats have won a district championship in eight-man football and the first time a district was won since that talented bunch of Wildcats in 2006.
Thursday’s game was over at halftime. Oxford opened up a 14-0 first quarter lead on the Raiders and then exploded in the second quarter with 32 unanswered points.
Oxford opened with a Dalton Silhan touchdown run. He rushed for 77 yards for the night.
The Cats then added a touchdown pass from Cal Shimkus to Tyler Vaughn for 26 yards and it was a 14-0 lead.
Oxford would explode for four touchdowns in the second quarter as Shimkus ran for 9 yards. Ty Carter, just a freshman, caught the next two passes for touchdowns of 38 and 9 yards.
Then Vaughn would seal the win with a 57 yard interception runback.
Oxford will have its hands full on Tuesday. The Cats played West Elk in week 2 losing 68-20. But a lot changes from September to November. For the bracket of the state playoffs click here.
