Phil was the third of four children and their family was raised in Texas and New Mexico where his father was employed.

On July 11, 1975, Phil and Amy Smith were united in marriage in Medicine Lodge and to this union were born three children: Troy, Sam and Bonnie. Together they celebrated 46 years of marriage.

Phil enjoyed learning and earned 3 degrees over the years. While receiving his music degree from Dodge City Community College, he became a Student Director and directed his favorite play, The Fiddler on the Roof, while also portraying Tevye. While there, he sang and acted in many choruses, plays, etc. Phil then went on to be the music director for 3 years at Victory Baptist Church in Carlsbad, New Mexico.

After that, Phil and his family relocated to the pastor for seven years at Sun City Baptist Church in Sun City to be closer to his wife’s family. The family moved one final time to Wellington where Phil mentored under Pastor Paul Clayton of the Wellington Baptist Temple. Phil then became the pastor at First Southern Baptist Church in Wellington. He was very involved with building, designing and drawing the plans for the current church. Pastor Phil led the congregation for many years and eventually retired from pastoring there.

Phil and Amy loved making music together and sang at home and church for many years. He could play the guitar, banjo and mandolin. Along with being a talented musician, Phil also enjoyed writing songs and poems. He was a gifted wood carver and carpenter. He loved working with oak and basswood.
