Peggy F. (Crittenden) Yearout, South Haven: July 18, 1932 – Dec. 16, 2022
Peggy F. (Crittenden) Yearout died on Friday, December 16, 2022, at home with her loving family beside her. She was born July 18, 1932, to Keith and Marvyce Crittenden in Waldron, Kans. Peggy lived her early years in Waldon. The family moved to Ashton, Kans., when Peggy was a freshman. Peggy attended South Haven school graduating in 1950. It was at South Haven high school that she met the love of her life and married Dwain (Bud), Yearout.
They were married on his birthday, June 30, 1950. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on June 30, 2020. They welcomed four children, Kenny, Keith, Kathy and Kim.
Peggy was a hard-working farm wife, not only running the household and taking her turn out in the fields during harvest. Ambitious and a warrior for fairness, Peggy (along with other local farm wives) advocated for farm bills. Working closely with Senator Bob Dole, on behalf of Kansas farmers, she traveled to and from Washington, DC, to testify in person.
After raising her children (although the job is never done), Peggy initiated a banking career, working in Blackwell, Okla., prior to opening and operating the Bank of Commerce extension office in South Haven. She served the bank for 19 years.
Famous for her baking and cooking forte, she prepared thousands of meals and fed hundreds of lucky recipients. Her homemade cinnamon rolls would melt in your mouth.
Generous and thoughtful, Peggy gave to “Share the Season” every year. And not uncommon (in early years), if a hitchhiker stopped along the road in front of their home or wondered up to their door, she would fix 1 or 2 egg sandwiches and sent them on their way.
Peggy and Bud farmed wheat and raised bison. They were members of the Kansas Buffalo Association. When not consumed with family obligations, Peggy loved bowling and participated in a bowling league for years. Peggy was an avid reader and served on the South Haven library board. She was a sports fanatic and loved K.C. Royals, K.U. Basketball, and the K.C. Chiefs; during the games all social interruptions were not allowed.
A remarkable, strong and compassionate woman, her legacy will endure through children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and those who knew her by heart.
She was preceded in death by her parents, infant son, brother and granddaughter.
Survivors include husband Dwain (Bud), children Kenny, Keith (Eva), Kathy Fell (Tom), Kim Yearout (Cynthia), Sister-in-laws Carol and Trudy. Grandchildren Tracy(deceased), Taryn, Tamra, Kylie, Lisa, Lori, Leslie, Luke, Travis, Theodore, Taylor and Tori. Sixteen great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and loving friends.
The family would like to express their thanks to The Good Shepherd Hospice staff for their excellent care, compassion and kindness throughout this journey. In lieu of flowers, memorials are established with the South Haven Fair Association PO Box 54, South Haven, KS 67140, and Good Shepherd Hospice of Wellington, KS.
