Post season is upon us this week for baseball, softball, golf and track

Crusader logo for article.by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — This is post-season week for boys baseball, girls softball, track and boys golf. Here is what to expect for the following week.

Boys baseball

Wellington will be traveling to Clay Center Tuesday where it will play the host in a four-team regional that will crown a champion for state. Clay Center is 40 miles northwest of Abilene and people going should expect an approximate 2 hours and 34-minute drive.

If Wellington, the 14th seed, upsets the third seed Tigers it will play the winner of #6 Augusta and #11 Chapman that will be playing at 2 p.m. Wellington did see Augusta during the regular season, splitting a doubleheader.

It has been years since Wellington made it to the state baseball tournament – perhaps the late 1990s.

Tuesday-  Clay Center Regional

First round:

Game #1: #6 Augusta (13-7) vs. #11 Chapman (8-10), 2 p.m.

Game #2: #3 Clay Center (14-4) vs. #14 Wellington (8-12), 25 min. after first game.

Championship:

Winner of Game #1 vs. Game #2, 25 minutes after Game 2.

Girls softball

Wellington goes into the girls’ softball regional, sporting a 12-game losing streak. The Crusaders, a 15th seed, must battle Andale/Garden Plain as the #2 seed. It doesn’t look promising.

Tuesday-  Clay Center Regional

First round:

Game #1: #7 Concordia (11-7) vs. #10 Winfield (11-9), 2 p.m.

Game #2: #2 Andale/Garden Plain (18-2) vs. #15 Wellington (5-15), 25 min. after first game.

Championship:

Winner of Game #1 vs. Game #2, 25 minutes after Game 2.

Boys golf

Monday – Winfield Quail Ridge Regional

The Crusaders will be looking for its second straight regional championship when it travels to Winfield today. The team consisting of Deitrek Gill, Brett Wyckoff, Caden Lawrence, Laken Smith, Owen Farley, and R.J. Clift are set to tee off this morning,. Wellington will be competing against Augusta, Clearwater, El Dorado, Mulvane, Rose Hill, Circle and Winfield.

It looks pretty good for the Crusaders, who won the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Div. IV Championship last week by a stunning 58 strokes. To qualify as a team for the Class 4A State Golf Tournament in Newton next week, Wellington must finish in the top two as a team.

Track and Field

The track post-season will officially kick off with the Class 4A Regional in El Dorado. Wellington has avoided in Andale, the traditional Class 4A powerhouse so it could be a great day for the Crusaders to qualify for the state meet in Wichita on Memorial Day weekend.
