Potential suicide situation at Madison and B in Wellington ends peacefully

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — A potential suicide situation ended peacefully tonight in the area surrounding Hillside Baptist Church.

According to Wellington Police Chief Tracy Heath, the Wellington Police Department received a report at 6:30 p.m. tonight concerning a 54-year-old man, who threatened to harm himself at his residence on the 1900 block of Madison and B Street.

The man allegedly had possession of a weapon, possibly a rifle, and was alone at the time, Heath said.

Heath said because of the weapon threat the streets of Vandenburgh, Madison St. Madison Lane, B Street and Adams Street were barricaded from traffic for about three hours. Police then established a command center at Hillside Baptist Church.

Heath said he determined that the situation needed the assistance of the Sumner County SWAT team. Other police agencies of Ark City and Mulvane and the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office arrived.

At around 9:30 p.m., the man got in his vehicle and drove a short distance where he was stopped and brought into custody. Heath said the man did not have possession of any weapons when apprehended and gave himself up without incident.

He was taken to Sumner Regional Medical Center for evaluation as a precautionary measure. Two officers were with him as of 10:30 p.m. Heath said he has not spoken to the individual, but plans to do so.

No charges have been made at this time.
