Presbyterian holding longest night of the year service on Tuesday, Dec. 22
Submitted to Sumner Newscow — The longest night of the year falls on Tuesday, December 22,. At 7 p.m. on that night, First Presbyterian Church, 1419 Western Ave, will hold a special worship service for the community.
The Longest Night Service, often called a Blue Christmas service, provides space to experience silence, contemplative music, prayers of remembrance and hope, and scripture in the midst of an often fast-paced and busy season.
Illness, grief, financial difficulties and loneliness can overwhelm us in the best of times. Family members and those who work in healthcare, eldercare and hospice may experience deep losses when caring for others. A Longest Night Service can be a meaningful way to acknowledge the things beyond our control, to welcome the Peace of Christ within and to find healing and hope.
Everyone is welcome, and all who confess Jesus as Lord are invited to celebrate communion. There will be a time for candle lighting as a sign of hope for ourselves, others, and our world.
A traditional Christmas Eve Candlelight Communion Service will be held on December 24 at 9 p.m.
