Two of the better teams in the tournament will be Oxford and Caldwell, that play Tuesday night.
Both teams got off to good starts last Friday. Oxford boys defeated Fairfield 89-56. Caldwell defeated South Barber 41-34.
In the Oxford game, the Wildcats got off to a tremendous start, outscoring Fairfield 33-7 in the first quarter and cruising from there.
“It’s always good to start the year off with a win on the road,” said Kyle Green, Oxford head boys basketball coach. “Fairfield is not a bad ball club by any means. I felt like we got off to such a fast start that it just snowballed from there on them.
Oxford would outscore Fairfield 31-7 inside the 3-point arch. Logan Mclain led Oxford with 22 points. Kyan Morris and Peyton Rush both had 14. Cordell Jordan scored 12, Hayden Ruyle 10, Kellen Green 6, Karter Hiten 6, Sam Wheeler 5. Fowler led Fairfield with 12.
“I’m most pleased with how well we shared the ball,” Green said. “We made the correct basketball play and took good shots and played our rear ends off on the defensive end of the floor. If we can continue to do those things, we will continue to improve as a team and be successful.”
Oxford is playing in the Border Queen Tournament in Caldwell and will battle the Bluejays on Tuesday.
“Caldwell is a program that is well coached, tradition-rich, and they do things the right way,” Green said. “It will be a good test to see where we are early in the season.”
Speaking of which, Caldwell got 15 points from Keiondre Smith and 12 from Teagan Thompson en route to a seven-point win vs. South Barber.
Caldwell trailed 12-8 at the end of the first quarter and was down by a point at the half 18-17. Caldwell won this game in the third with an 11-2 output en route to a win. The other scorers were: Jackson Risley with 6, Wrangler Jesina 3, and Provencio 2. South Barber was led by Meyers with 11.
