Saturday shooting update: WPD will not release names of officers involved in shooting, KBI takes control of investigation
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow – Wellington Police Chief Tracy Heath will not be releasing the names of the officers involved in the shooting that occurred at 1111 E. 7th St. in Wellington Saturday night.
He has also turned over all investigative matters on this case to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
“We want to be as transparent as possible,” Heath said. “So we are having the KBI handle this case.”
Harley Bagby, 30, of Wellington, was shot and killed at 10:26 p.m. Saturday by a Wellington police officer during a disturbance at his home.
According to the KBI press release, preliminary information indicates that two officers with the WPD arrived at the residence. Officers made contact with the reporting party who indicated her boyfriend, Bagby, was inside the residence, tearing up the house. Officers were given access and made entry into the residence.
As officers entered the residence, they were met by Bagby, who exited a bedroom into the hallway with a large knife, according to the press release. Officers gave commands to Bagby to drop the knife. He did not comply. He then advanced toward the officers. One officer fired multiple times and struck Bagby. Wellington EMS pronounced him deceased at about 11:05 p.m.
The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave. The KBI is now conducting its independent investigation. Once the investigation has concluded, the findings will be turned over to the Sumner County Attorney for review.
The investigation is ongoing. No further information will be released at this time, according to the KBI.
