by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Several Sumner County athletes will be competing at Wichita State University this weekend at the high school track meet, the largest high school participatory state sporting event in Kansas. All classifications will be competing at Cessna Stadium starting Friday and going through Saturday.

Wellington qualified in five events — fewer than it has had in recent years.

Conway Springs has 11 athletes qualified in Class 3A. Caldwell also has 11 competing in Class 1A.

Schools from across Kansas competed in regionals last weekend, and the top four in each event moved on to the state meet.

Jessica Heidel of Belle Plaine may have the best chance of any Sumner County athlete to come home with medals. She is qualified in three events. She has the second best distance in 3A in the long jump and triple jump and the fifth best time in the 100 meters.

Also in 3A, MaKayla Hollis of Conway Springs, has the second best height in the pole vault.

Lucas Schafer of Conway Springs has the second best height in the high jump, and fifth best in pole vault in boys 3A.

In Class 2A, Kaleb Hunt of Oxford has the second best high jump in this class. He is also qualified in the 200 run and 110 hurdles.

In Class 1A Caldwell has a lot of athletes, but only Shelby Schmidt in the 200, has a top five qualifying time.

There are 16 in each event, and anything can happen at the state meet.

Friday is usually the track qualifying round, with finals Saturday. The 100 meters’ qualifying is held Saturday morning and the finals that afternoon. Field events start Friday and continue Saturday.
