Shiney Hughes is named the Big Cheese Athlete of the Week
Catcher Shiney Hughes with the catch.
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Shiney Hughes, a Wellington senior girls softball player, has been named the Big Cheese Athlete of the Week.
Shiney Hughes
Hughes, a three-year starting catcher (maybe four if it wasn’t for the pandemic), has been a key component to Wellington’s current four-game winning streak. In game two against Buhler, she struck out with Wellington down 7-2 but was able to make it to first after the catcher boggled the ball. She then stole second and came home on a catcher’s error. From that point forward, Wellington scored seven runs in the inning to go on and win 10-7.
Then in the second game in a 14-5 victory over Belle Plaine, she bunted for a triple to spark another Wellington rally. As a catcher, Hughes continues to be a steady hand.
For her efforts, Hughes is the recipient of a large delicious Big Cheese Pizza at 324 N. Washington
