Small Saturday evening fire results in $2,500 damage at Shady Lane Court apartments

Sumner Newscow report — A small fire at 1019 Shady Lane Court apartments in Wellington resulted in no injuries and $2,500 damage Saturday evening.

The Wellington Fire/EMS responded to reported smoke coming from the basement at 1019 Shady Lane Court on Saturday at 7:34 p.m. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke coming from a basement door.

Two adjoining apartments were evacuated as crews stretched a hose line into the basement and found a mattress on fire. The fire was quickly extinguished and crews removed the smoke from the apartment with a ventilation fan. 

The cause of the fire was careless smoking. The owner/occupant was John Wallis.

There were 10 fire personnel on the scene with mutual aid from the Mayfield, Fire District 9 (Belle Plaine) and Oxford Fire Departments. Other agencies assisting included the Wellington Police, Wellington Electric Department, and Emergency Management.
