South Haven girls keep rolling with 50-8 shellacking of Central on Monday, CV-Dexter next
By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The South-Central Border League Tournament has just started but the South Haven girls are clearly the favorite.
The Cardinals — ranked No. 5 in the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association poll (the new one comes out tomorrow) — destroyed Central-Burden 50-8 in Monday’s first-round game. It wasn’t that close.
They will square off against Cedar Vale/Dexter in the championship semifinals at Cowley College on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. The Spartans defeated Sedan 53-52. In other SCBL tournament games, Flinthills defeated Udall 42-36, and West Elk upended Argonia 41-36.
The boys will play quarterfinal games tonight.
On Monday, South Haven opened with a 12-0 first-quarter lead and held a 25-4 advantage at the half. It would outscore Central 25-4 in the second half.
Adele Helsel led the Cardinals with 12 points. Kelly Theurer scored 8, Aubrey Pond 8, Avery Strickland 6, Jacee Theurer 4, Addison Heater 4, Jessica Broyles 2, Makenzie Callison 2, Rahlee Colwell 2.
The Cardinals are on a roll, having won four straight, including an overwhelming win over Flinthills, 43-29, on Friday. The Mustangs are supposed to be the team to beat in the SCBL, but the South Haven girls have proven otherwise. The only two losses this year have come against the top 10 teams in Class 1A Div. 1. South Haven is in Div. 2.
