South Haven National Honor Society takes on New York City

South Haven’s National Honor Society made a trip to New York and found themselves live on national television during The Today Show. (Click on photo for larger version).

by Lisa Moreland, Special to Sumner Newscow —The South Haven High School National Honor Society travelled to New York City for a fun-filled trip from Friday, March 16 through Tuesday, March 20 during spring break. The group returned to Kansas right in time, before the latest nor’easter storm. We started our time in New York City with dinner at Planet Hollywood and second row seats at The Lion King, which was amazing!

The South Haven group then left The Row Hotel at 8 a.m. the next day for the Statue of Liberty.  The museum was awesome, and we learned lots from the new audio tours.  Did you know that 54 million pounds of concrete were used in the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty that was brought here from France in 1875?  It was the next biggest concrete project in the United States. The Hoover Dam, built in 1931, was the first.

Then, we had a walking and bus tour of New York Saturday afternoon. The highlights were the Flat Iron building, Kleinfeld’s, and “shopping” in Chinatown.  We enjoyed a fabulous dinner at Paesano’s in Little Italy.

Sunday, the group started the day by taking the subway to the American Museum of Natural History and then enjoying a walk through Central Park.  We also toured the Cathedral of St. John the Divine and Grand Central Station.  Both were breathtaking. Dinner was at Stella’s on the sixth floor of Macy’s, the largest department store in the world.  The evening concluded with a visit to the 86th floor of the Empire State Building.

Monday morning, we started bright and early for seven of us who walked to Rockefeller Plaza for a taping of the Today Show. The rest of the group joined us for a trip to the Top of the Rock and a tour of Radio City Music Hall. We then enjoyed eating lunch from the street vendors and taking the subway to a tour of Madison Square Garden.  After that, some took naps because of their tired feet, some went ice-skating, and some hit Times Square shopping!
