South Sumner to battle Oxford tonight in a huge Sumner County tilt

By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Here’s a roundup of Sumner County games outside Wellington.

South Sumner (3-0) at Oxford (2-1)

This will be the best intra-Sumner match-up of the season, which involves three Sumner County towns: Caldwell, South Haven and Oxford.

Both teams are rolling.

No team has come within 30 points of the Outlaws since South Sumner’s happy return to eight-man football. But the Outlaws can’t sleep on Oxford, which has been put through the wringer against quality opponents with a cumulative 5-1 record when not playing the Wildcats. Also, this is Oxford’s homecoming.

This marks the first district game for both teams. The other district opponents are Cedar Vale-Dexter, Central Burden and Udall. Judging from the scores, this all Sumner County battle could be for the Eight-man Div. II District 2 championship.

Moundridge (2-1) at Conway Springs (0-3)

It’s week 4, and Conway Springs is still looking for its first win, something that was unheard of just two years ago. Moundridge may be a tough team to beat. The Wildcats are 2-1, having beaten Sedgwick 41-0 and Ellinwood 49-26 after getting demolished by No. 1 Sterling in the first game.

Cunningham (3-0) at Argonia-Attica (2-1) (in Attica)

A&A will have its hands full tonight in Attica. Cunningham comes into the game winners of 11 straight, including a six-man state championship in 2025. Since returning to eight-man, Cunningham has defeated Spearville 40-0, Norwich 28-0 and Hutchinson Central Christian 46-0. Cunningham is ranked No. 5 in the Class 8-man Div. II Kansas Media poll.

Medicine Lodge 26 Belle Plaine 22

The Dragons lost their 25th straight game, losing to Medicine Lodge in an unusual Thursday night game.
