Wellington volleyballΒ

The Wellington volleyball team is 6-3, which is the best start for a varsity Crusader unit in maybe ever. Even in 2017, when Wellington finished third in the Class 4A state tournament, the Crusaders were 1-5 at the start of the year.

Wellington finished second on Saturday at the Wichita Trinity Invitational, going 4-1. Then, on Tuesday in Rose Hill, Wellington split an Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Div. IV triangular.

In the Trinity tournament, Wellington won by beating Circle 26-24, 25-23 in the first outing. The Crusaders haven’t beaten the Thunderbird in years.

The Dukes then battled Trinity, losing in two sets, 25- 16 and 25-14. Trinity hasn’t lost a match all year.

Wellington then went on to sweep the next three, beating Augusta 12-25, 25-12, 25-17; Wichita East 25-21, 25-20; and Ellsworth 24-26, 25-22, 25-18.

On Tuesday, Wellington traveled to Rose Hill. The Crusaders fell to Rose Hill, which is also undefeated, 25-21, 19-15, 25-22. The Crusaders then rallied to beat Collegiate in two 25-18, 25-20.

Andale is still lurking. On Tuesday, it beat Clearwater in three: 25-23, 23-25, 25-20. Andale is on an eight-game winning streak. It’s only loss was to Andover in the season opener.

Wellington will host its first triangular next Tuesday when Buhler and Clearwater come to town.

WHS TENNIS

The Wellington tennis team was in action on Tuesday and ended up winning the four-team quad. Wellington’s good performance by all of its individuals contributed to the 22 team points needed to win the title.

Wellington was led by their doubles teams, who both finished the day undefeated. Β  Playing No. 1 doubles, freshman sisters Addi and Gracie Thomson went 2-0 on the day to capture first place.Β  The sisters started slow in a close match with Chaparral, getting down 1-2.Β  After their nerves settled a little, they took the lead 5-4 and then finished the match out 8-5.Β  In their final match, they played a Sterling team that was much better but dominated the match 8-2.Β

Playing #2, doubles were Jordan Koehn and another freshman, Sienna Goodrum.Β  The two girls for Wellington went 3-0 on the day, also good for first place.Β  In their first match, they had to come from behind to get into a tiebreak and won the tiebreak 7-5 against Chaparral.Β  In their second match, they fell behind 0-2 but then gained momentum and had an 8-4 win.Β  In their final match against Sterling, the pair also had a dominant match, with one 8-2.Β

Also medaling for Wellington was their No. 2 singles player Scout Douglas.Β  She had a great day in singles going 2-1. She took care of her first two opponents beating Chaparral 8-4, and beating Kingman 8-2. In her final match she ran into a good Sterling player and lost 3-8. Douglas finished in second place overall in her first Varsity action.Β

Addie Hinshaw played at No. 1 singles and finished third overall. She played some very good opponents and lost to two previous state players from Sterling and Kingman.Β  Hinshaw beat Chaparral 8-5.Β

WELLINGTON GIRLS GOLF

This is the first year Wellington Ladies Golf has had an opportunity for a JV squad. The Crusaders have 11 total girls out and so the coaching staff sent four girls to represent today at the Andover Central tournament at Sierra Hills (a par 3 course).

The four girls we sent were Kadynce Aufdengarten, Harper Seeliger, Amberly Stone, and Lorelei Stafford.Β

“We think nerves were a pretty big part of today as the girls talked about being excited but nervous about the tournament,” said Vanessa Sawyer, girls golf coach. “They made us proud as they continued to improve as the day went on. We’re excited for the future of the program as the team continues to grow.”Β

The scores for the day can be found here.Β
