Sports roundup: Wellington basketball, wrestling, Border Queen roundup…
By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow report — It’s been a busy Thursday in sports in Sumner County. Here’s the rundown and a look ahead.
Girls basketball — Wellington 64 Pratt 24
The Wellington girls easily made it 3-0 and reached the Cheney Tournament Finals on Saturday. But the game itself was secondary.
Wellington Senior Kylan Gregory, who has a knee that may have come from a demon, is hurt again. She hurt her knee late in the second quarter. Gregory has been struggling with the knee for over 18 months that has included two ACL surgeries. She went down again late in the second quarter. Gregory has played one game this high school season.
Wellington head coach Eric Adams said he does not know of Gregory’s future status this morning.
As for the game itself, Wellington overwhelmed Pratt in a typical Lady Crusader contest. Wellington led 20-7 at the end of the first quarter and held a 36-17 advantage at the half. It was 51-20 after three, en route to victory.
“The girls played so hard,” Adams said. “Of course, the injury affected the girls during halftime, but we have mentally tough kids, and they came out in the second half and played for Ky.”
Scoring for Wellington: Dru Zeka 16, Kirstyn Gregory 16, Lyndi Barton 15, Isabelle Newman 8, Claire Ginter 2, Cruz Cornejo 2, Addy Schnelle 2, Georgia Gulick 2.
Boys basketball — Pratt 67 Wellington 45
Wellington had its best half of the season so far
. The Crusaders were leading 27-23 at the half, thanks to a big second quarter when they outscored the Greenbacks 15-7. Unfortunately, there are two halves to play in basketball. Pratt would outscore Wellington 19-7 in the third and 25-11 in the fourth to win by 22 points.
Wellington head coach Joe Newman states:
“We played really well in the first half. Holding them to 23 points was impressive. Things are starting to click. In the second half our turnovers led to easy baskets for them. We competed, but ran out of steam.”
The Crusaders were led by Cole Zeka, who continues to make great strides on the court. He scored 18 points, including sinking four 3-pointers. Other scorers were: Milo Elder 6, Cooper Hatfield 6, Kingston Scott 7, Jackson Newman 4, Camden White 4.
Arley Morrell led Pratt with 23 points. Caleb Strong scored 10.
