WMS girls tennis

Thursday: The Wellington Middle School Tennis Team hosted their final dual match Thursday against Derby.  The Lady Knights dominated their opponent, winning every match except one.  Next match is Tuesday at Pioneer League tournament.

The Wellington Middle School Girls Tennis Team participated in the 10-team Hutchinson Invitational on Sept. 29.  Team scores are not yet available, Wellington individual finishes are as follows:

Wellington High School tennis:

Tournament of Champions – Collegiate last Saturday featuring some of the top teams in the state.

Featured #1 ranked Blue Valley North in 6A, #3 ranked Blue Valley in 6A, #5 Blue Valley West in 6A, #6 Blue Valley Northwest in 6A, #1 Andover in 5A, #2 Bishop Carroll in 5A, #3 Ark City in 5A, #8 Kapaun in 5A, #1 Collegiate, #2 McPherson, #5 Independence all in 4A, #1 Hesston, #2 Independent, #5 Conway Springs all in 3A.  Plus many other good teams. There were 40 singles and 40 doubles teams. with 16 singles and 16 doubles teams had to play feeder matches to even make the main draw.  

Wellington’s top performance was Madison Adams and Mekenna Adams in doubles finishing 23rd.  They opened things up against Ivers/Corrigan from McPherson and came up a bit short losing a tiebreak match.  McPherson has a solid team, Ivers was fifth at state last year in doubles. 

“This might have been our best performance of the year so far,” said Brian Aufdengarten, Wellington head tennis coach.

The pair then beat a team from Maize 8-2, then lost to Decker/Shrock from Hesston in another tiebreak match.  The Adams girls then lost another close match to Independent 8-5.  The finished the day off beating Derby 8-1.

In only their second meet together Dietra Sober and Madi Lewellen had to play to get in the tournament and beat a solid Conway Spring team in a tiebreak match.  Then they played Mindt/Baldwin from Kapaun and lost 8-3.  Mindt won state two years ago in doubles and was hurt in the postseason last year.  The pair then lost to a state qualifying Blue Valley West team 8-4.  The pair had another tough match against Parsons and lost 8-4, but in their next match they beat a good team from Independence 8-4.  In their 6th match of the day they got beat by a Maize team. 

“Going 2-4 for them on the day was good, there was some very tough teams and never got blown out and had some good wins,” Aufdengarten said.

Singles player Abby Lowe also had to qualify in a feeder match and won over an Ark City girl in a tiebreak match.  Lowe then lost to Staats 8-0, Staats finished 11th in 5A last year.  Lowe then lost to Ford from Parsons 8-2 and lost to Gemperli from Blue Valley 8-5.  Lowe then beat Jiang in a come from behind match where she was down 6-1 and Lowe won in a another tiebreak match.  In her final match Lowe lost to McChristian from Ark City 8-6.  She also finished 30th on the day. 

“Abby did well she just fell behind early in some matches and made good comebacks against players,”

Singles player Lexi Saffell finished 35th but had some solid performances going 2-2.  She lost her opening match to McChristian from Ark City 7-4, then she beat Sherron from Blue Valley West 8-2.  Her best match on the day came against Arteburn from Kapaun but she came up short losing 8-6. 

“Lexi really played well against a decent player,” Aufdengarten said.

In her final match she beat Floyd from Ark City 8-5.

Wellington took an extra doubles team of Noelle Wright and Jaylynn Luna.  The pair also had to play a feeder match and lost to Kapaun 7-4.  Then the pair ran into Independence’s #1 team and lost 8-0.  They then beat a team from Lee Summit North 8-6, then lost their final match to another Lee Summit North team 8-3.
