Jason Haydon at 160 and Taylon Lamkin at 195 have now gotten their brackets for the state tournament in Salina to be held Friday and Saturday at the Bicentennial Center.

Both boys are No. 4 seeds going in which means they will battle the top seeded wrestlers from another regional.

Haydon, a senior with a 20-5 record, will be battling Spencer Bird, a junior from Lindsborg-Smoky Valley with a 36-5 record. Tournament brackets can be found on the KSHSAA.org website.

Haydon, making his third appearance in the state tournament, will battle either the winner or loser of Tyler Harris (27-4) of Atchison or Zack Roark (17-7) of Columbus in the second round.

Taylon Lamkin, a junior, at 21-16 will be making his first performance in the state tournament. He will be wrestling Gavin Houser, a senior from Columbus who is 28-9 in the first round.

Lamkin will either wrestle the winner or loser of Tyler Peterson of Lindsborg-Smoky Valley (36-4) or Zak Carter of Baldwin (21-14) in the second round.

Both boys qualified after two grueling days at the Class 4A Regional in Augusta Friday and Saturday.

Haydon has been nursing a rib injury for much of the second half of the season. After wrestling in Augusta, the WHS coaching staff held him out for the rest of the regular season. Haydon then got the benefit of a bye in the first round before wrestling twice, going 2-0 for the weekend.

In a measure of precaution, Haydon injury defaulted on matches he didn’t have to wrestle including the consolation finals. He qualified for state with a 7-4 decision over Chase Miller of Mulvane.

Lamkin had a big tournament over the weekend. After getting off to a slow start, he was pinned by Derrick Gates of Andale. His chances looked slim of advancing with Colby Willis of Augusta looming. He was decisioned by Willis 3-1 in a league dual in Augusta in January.

However, Lamkin would pin Willis at the 3:58 mark. He then pinned Manny Martinez of El Dorado at the 1:35 mark to qualify.

Lamkin becomes the first Wellington non-Jason Haydon wrestler to get to state since Dray Meridith in 2011.
