Structure fire at 418 S. F. Street in Wellington was caused by careless smoking

Sumner Newscow report — A structure fire at 418 S. F St. in Wellington was caused by careless smoking yesterday evening. There were no injuries. Danny Teague was listed as the owner/occupant.

According to a Wellington Fire Department report, firefighters responded to a call at 10:24 p.m. Upon arrival, they found a detached shed behind the residence fully engulfed in flames. The firefighter extended a hose through a fence and over a large amount of debris to reach the shed.

The electrical service to the house was burned in half and lying on the ground. Several extension cords were lying on the ground and hanging in the air.

There were many trip hazards and materials used for fencing in the rear yard, adding to the difficulty of reaching the fire. An individual was sleeping in the shed and stated that he woke up to a fire on the floor. Firefighters limited the fire spread to the shed and the debris surrounding the shed.

Due to a large amount of combustible material in the backyard and the shed n0t approved for habitation, this could have easily been a fatal fire, according to the press release. Instead, there was about $1,000 in estimated damages.

There were eight firefighters on the scene, including two pickups, a fire engine, a ladder, and one ambulance. The Wellington police and electric department assisted with the case.
