Structure fire Sunday afternoon at triplex apartments in Wellington causes $36,000 damage
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — A structure fire caused extensive damage to a triplex apartment building at 420 North A Street, just west of the Wellington Middle School.
On Sunday at 11:50 a.m., Wellington firefighters arrived at the triplex to discover fire and heavy smoke showing through a window from an apartment. Greg Hinshaw of Wellington is the owner of the apartment complex. All occupants of the apartments were displaced due to the fire.
There were no injuries.
Crews immediately applied water through the window to knock down the flames and other firefighters entered through the front door to begin searching for victims and finish extinguishing the fire. Other crews searched the adjoining apartments and started to remove smoke from all three apartments.
There was heavy fire and smoke damage to the middle apartment and smoke damage to the adjoining apartments. All occupants of the apartments were displaced due to the fire.
There was an estimated $35,000 damage to the apartment including structure and contents. The cause of the fire was electrical but Wellington Fire Chief Tim Hay said it not known specifically how or where the fire started.
Mutual aid was provided by Oxford, Fire District 9, and Mayfield. Other agencies involved included the Wellington Police, Wellington Electric, Kansas Gas, Sumner County Emergency Management. The equipment at the scene included one chiefs truck, four engines, one ladder, one ambulance, and two pickups.
