Sub-state basketball tournament play begins tonight for many Sumner teams
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The post season starts tonight for several Sumner County basketball teams not named Wellington.
Here’s a run down of four sub-states that include Sumner County teams.
BOYS
Class 3A
CHENEY SUB STATE
Monday – first round:
#8 Belle Plaine (3-17) at #1 Garden Plain (16-4).
#5 Douglass (8-12) at #4 Cheney (12-8).
#7 Leon-Bluestem (3-17) at #2 Conway Springs (16-4).
#6 Chaparral (4-16) at #3 Wichita Independent (14-6).
Thursday semifinals at CheneyÂ
Belle Plaine-Garden Plain winner vs. Douglass-Cheney winner, times TBA.
Bluestem-Conway Springs winner vs. Chaparral-W. Independent winner, times TBA.
Saturday – Finals at Cheney, 7:30 p.m.
Analysis: This is wide-open sub-state in which four teams have a good chance of winning the tournament. Garden Plain is the hottest team here at 16-4 – last losing to Cheney on Feb. 2. Conway Springs hasn’t looked crisp as of late, losing to Wichita Trinity and barely getting past Medicine Lodge. However, it picked up a 10-point win over Cheney to close out the regular season.
Both Wichita Independent and Cheney also have potential of winning this tournament. Cheney playing at home could be big for this group of Cardinals.
Class 2A
SEDAN SUB STATE
Tuesday:
#8 Udall (5-15) at #1 Sedan (19-0)
#5 Yates Center (10-10) at #4 Pittsburg Colgan (12-7).
#7 Oswego (7-12) at #2 West Elk (14-6).
#3 Uniontown (13-7) at #6 Oxford (8-12).
Friday – Semifinals at Sedan.
Saturday – Finals, 7:30 p.m.
Analysis. Oxford would have to go on the run of its life to come out of this sub-state a winner. Sedan is the favorite to win at home but keep your eye on Pittsburg Colgan as the No. 4 seed as a tournament dark horse.
Class 1A Div. 1
DEXTER SUB STATE
Monday
#1 Pretty Prairie (13-7) bye
#5 Fairfield (4-16) at #4 Central-Burden (4-15)
#2 South Barber (11-9) bye
#6 South Haven (3-16) at #3 Dexter/Cedar Vale (10-11)
Thursday– semifinals at Dexter.
Saturday – Finals, 7:30 p.m.
Analysis: South Haven has had just one league win and it was against Udall. It wasn’t but a few years ago when South Haven and Udall were big-time players battling each other for the opportunity to get to state.
Class 1A Div. 2
CALDWELL SUB STATE
Monday
#1 Attica (18-2) bye.
#5 Norwich (7-13) at #4 Caldwell (12-8)
#2 Argonia (14-6) bye.Â
#6 Cunningham (4-15) at #3 Ashland (13-6).
Thursday– semifinals at Caldwell.
Saturday – Finals, 7:30 p.m.
Analysis: This sub-state looks very, very interesting. Caldwell is sitting at 12-8 and hosts of its own sub-state. Yet it is only a fourth seed. The scenario of a Titan Bowl Sub-state Championship featuring Attica vs. Argonia looks promising.
GIRLS
Class 3A
CHENEY SUB STATE
Tuesday
#8 Belle Plaine (1-19) at #1 Garden Plain (18-2).
#5 Douglass (11-9) at #4 Wichita Independent (13-7).
#7 Chaparral (1-19) at #2 Conway Springs (17-3).
#6 Bluestem (3-17) at Cheney (13-7).
Friday (at Cheney)
Belle Plaine-Garden Plain winner vs. Douglass-W. Independent winner, times TBA.
Chaparral-Conway Springs winner vs. Bluestem/Cheney winner, times TBA.
Saturday – Finals, 6 p.m.
Analysis: This sub-state is loaded. Conway Springs comes in as the Central Plains League champions, but is a No. 2 seed to Garden Plain because the Owls have the better record. Conway Springs and Garden Plain have placed twice with Conway Springs winning the league contest.
However, don’t count out Cheney, Wichita Independent and Douglass which all factor into pulling off the upset. Cheney is at home so there is that.
Class 2A
SEDAN SUB STATE
Monday:
#8 Yates Center (2-18) at #1 Sedan (18-1)
#5 Udall (9-11) at #4 Pittsburg Colgan (10-9).
#7 Oxford (4-15) at #2 Uniontown (13-7).
#3 Oswego (11-9) at #6 West Elk (5-14).
Thursday – Semifinals at Sedan.
Saturday – Finals, 6 p.m.
Analysis. Like the boys, the Oxford girls would have to pull off some incredible upsets to win.
Class 1A Div. 1
DEXTER SUB STATE
Tuesday
#1 South Barber (15-5) bye
#5 Pretty Prairie (3-17) at #4 Central-Burden (9-12)
#2 South Haven (11-8) bye.
#6 Dexter/Cedar Vale (2-17) at #3 Fairfield (10-10)
Friday- semifinals at Dexter.
Saturday – Finals, 6 p.m.
Analysis: South Haven girls will probably play Fairfield on Friday. A victory there could pit the Cardinals against South Barber, which is 15-5.
Class 1A Div. 2
CALDWELL SUB STATE
Tuesday
#1 Norwich (19-1) bye.
#5 Argonia (8-13) at #4 Caldwell (9-11)
#2 Cunningham (15-5) bye. Â
#6 Ashland (3-16) vs. #3 Attica (15-5)
Friday– semifinals at Caldwell.
Saturday – Finals, 6 p.m.
Analysis: Argonia and Caldwell have a very interesting first-round matchup tomorrow. The winner then plays Norwich, a heavy favorite to win the Caldwell sub-state.
