Sub-state update: Wellington gets post-season assignments, sub-state updates for Sumner teams
Sumner Newscow report – Wellington got its sub-state pairings today. And here is also n update of every other sub-state involving Sumner County teams (for all the state’s sub-state pairings, click here):
Wellington
Boys: The Wellington boys avoided a sub-state against McPherson, but may have to go to Circle with a third game against the Thunderbirds. Wellington lost to Andale 51-45 on Thursday (see stats here), dropping it to No. 6 in the Class 4A-West substate.
Wellington will host Buhler on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the first round. If the Crusaders can win here, that would probably set up a date at Circle on Friday. Wellington lost to Circle twice — once in a buzzer-beater in the Chaparral Tournament finals and the other in a 66-36 shellacking at home.
Girls: The Wellington girls will host Abilene on Wednesday at 6 p.m. If the Crusaders win, they will host the winner of Chapman-Clay Center from northeast Kansas.
Interesting pairings elsewhere, Wamego and Bishop Miege are slated in the same sub-state. This could have implications for Wellington (provided it gets to state) because Miege is likely the eighth seed if it gets to Salina. Wamego, if it goes, will be the odds-on favorite, having toppled the powerful private school that has won three state championships.
Boys: Belle Plaine sub-state (Host, Conway Springs participating)
Wichita Independent is the No. 2 seed and the odds-on favorite to win this sub-state. Conway Springs gets the Panthers in the first round. Belle Plaine battles West Elk in an intriguing No. 4 and 5 spot. The Dragons, as host, could get to finals if they can get by a couple of South-Central Border League teams.
Girls: Belle Plaine sub-state (Host, Conway Springs participating)
Like the boys, Wichita Independent girls are probably the favorites to win. Belle Plaine and Conway Springs girls will both be lower seeds and are probably underdogs against their opponents. But they both could score upsets.
Boys: Oxford sub-state
Tough sub-state for the Cats. Wichita Classical is 18-2, and Norwich is 15-4. Getting by either one, let alone two, to get to state will be a significant accomplishment.
Girls: Oxford sub-state
Oxford will play either Central-Burden or Wichita Classical. If the team can get to the championship, it could be a battle against Norwich, which is heavily favored to win.
Boys: Kiowa-South Barber sub-state (Caldwell, Argonia, South Haven participating)
Caldwell eliminated South Haven 51-27 on Friday. Argonia was also eliminated by Cunningham 63-47. That leaves Caldwell as the lone Sumner County school. It battles Cunningham at 6 p.m. on Friday in Caldwell. This is a winnable sub-state for the Bluejays.
Girls: Kiowa-South Barber sub-state (Caldwell, Argonia, South Haven participating)
The KSHSAA bracket does not reflect the latest update, including Argonia’s 27-26 victory over South Barber and Attica’s 61-19 victory over Caldwell. Argonia and South Haven will play in the semifinals.
