Summer food program offers free meal to kids for USD 353
by Amber Schmitz, Sumner Newscow — Kids will have the
option of eating breakfast, lunch, and even an afternoon snack with their friends, thanks to the OPAA! Food Management summer food program.
Last year, USD 353 partnered with OPAA! Food Management, which offers students three different healthy choices at breakfast and lunch daily, along with milk or bottled water.
The nutritious summer meals are offered at no charge, and adhere to child nutrition guidelines. Although children of all ages are welcome, adults are not allowed to eat, and children must eat the food at the location where it is being served, and can’t take it with them.
Breakfasts consisting of cereal, muffins, fruit and yogurt, for example, will be available at the Wellington Recreation Center from 8-9 a.m. and Kennedy Elementary from 7:30-8 a.m. Monday-Friday. Prepackaged sack lunches, which may include a sandwich, etc., will be served at the Wellington Public Library from 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and Kennedy Elementary from noon-1 p.m. Monday-Friday.
Snacks will be served from 2-2:30 p.m. at the library on Fridays, prior to the Summer Reading Program’s free movie.
OPAA! will deliver the meals, and there are no income guidelines, kids just have to show up if they want to eat. Meals will be served June 5 to 30.
