Sumner County athletes tune up for the 2018 Kansas Track and Field Championships
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Sumner County track athletes are the last to finish off the spring sports season, and hopefully they will not finish last in the Kansas State Track and Field Championships at Wichita State University.
The track meet begins Friday with preliminaries and field events. Saturday will be the running finals and more field events.
As far as Sumner County athletes, there are not as many competing as in years past. Still there are a few looking to come away with medals.
At the top of the Sumner County list is Taylor McGlothlin who will be competing in three events, with a strong chance of winning a state championship in the 400 meters. It has been awhile since Wellington has had a state track champion. McGlothlin, a senior, is currently the school record holder and has the top Class 4A time in 4A going into the event.
In the regional last weekend, McGlothlin ran the quarter-mile type race at 59.15. The second runner to come close to that time in the regionals is Corrin Searcy of Tonganoxie who ran the time at 59.64.
McGlothlin is also near the top in the 200 with the state’s fifth best time of 26.67. She then has a chance to pick up a third medal in the triple jump where she is leaping at 35-09.
Wellington has four other track athletes participating this weekend. Brooke McCorkle, a double sport athlete also participating in softball, is currently vying for a state championship in the discus. Last weekend, she had the third best throw in the state with a 114-10 throw. Taylor Meyer is also vying for a place in the javelin. She comes into the meet with a state eighth-best 125-08 throw.
There are two Wellington boys at the state meet. Junior Chase Pfalzgraf has qualified in the 800 meters marking this the first time a Wellington athlete is at state in this specific event in years. He had a 12th state regional best time of 2:02.15.
Eric Kop could eke his way into the finals of the 110 meter hurdles. His regional time of 15.24 was the ninth best last weekend in Class 4A.
Elsewhere, Conway Springs will have three individuals and the 4×100 meter relay team. In the boys there are four individual events with Conway Springs athletes. Keep your eye on freshman Jonathon Wright, who goes into the state meet with the second best leap in the high jump in 3A at 6’06”.
There will be four Class 1A Sumner County athletes. Tylyn Ward of Caldwell has the best chance of placing in the 800. She is seeded fourth at 2:33.71.
