Sumner County Commissioner minutes: July 19 – July 20

Sumner Newscow report — The Sumner County Commissioner meeting minutes for July 19 and July 20.

July 19, 2021 – 9 a.m.

The Board of County Commissioners met in regular session in the Commission Room of the Sumner County Courthouse.  Those present were Vice-Chairman Jim Newell and Commissioner John Cooney. Chairman Steve Warner was absent.   Also present were County Clerk Debra A. Norris and 80th House Representative Bill Rhiley.

The Commission reviewed and unanimously approved the minutes of July 12 and 13.

Larry Harsh presented the commission with a copy of the letter from the 1971 Commission to the 2021 Commission that was recovered from the time capsule on Sunday, July 11.  Mr. Harsh also presented a picture of the Commission from 1971, which includes Commissioner Everly Harsh, his father.

County Counselor Jack Potucek provided general reviews and updates.

County Financial Advisor Elliott Jackson worked with the Commission on the 2022 budget.  Commissioner Warner was available by speakerphone.  County Treasurer Dannetta Cook was also present.  After review and discussion, the Commission approved a 1 step (2 percent) wage increase for all employees.  Elected officials and Directors were reviewed and discussed.

There being no further business, the Board of County Commissioners adjourned at 10:28 a.m.

July 20, 2021 – 9 a.m.

The Board of County Commissioners met in regular session in the Commission Room of the Sumner County Courthouse.  Those present were Vice-Chairman Jim Newell and Commissioner John Cooney.  Chairman Steve Warner was absent.  Also present were County Clerk Debra A. Norris and 80th House Representative Bill Rhiley.

County Counselor Jack Potucek provided general reviews and updates.

At 9:14 a.m., upon unanimous vote, the Commission entered into executive session for 5 minutes with Counselor Potucek for an attorney/client privileged matter.  Clerk Norris was asked to remain in the meeting.  At 9:19 a.m., the Commission reconvened in an open session.  No binding action was taken as a result of the executive session.

The Commission spoke by speakerphone with Health Department Director Laura Rettig concerning growing positive numbers of COVID-19.  The new positive cases are from those that are not vaccinated.  Rettig also reports the Delta variant is in Sumner County.  Available vaccines can help protect the citizens.

The Commission reviewed and unanimously approved current year abatement orders in the amount of $409.98.  Prior year abatements were also approved in the amount of $249.64.

There being no further business, the Board of County Commissioners adjourned at 9:41 a.m.
