Submitted to Sumner Newscow — The Sumner County Fire Chiefs Association has recently purchased a grain engulfment rescue device through the donations of the following businesses-Danville Cooperative Association, Farmers Cooperative Grain Association in Conway Springs, The Scoular Company, Farmers Cooperative Grain Company of Caldwell, and Two Rivers COOP.

The device which is available to any county fire department will be dispatched to an emergency incident in Sumner County in the event of a grain engulfment of a person or persons.

The rescue device is panels that are placed around the engulfment victim and prevent further engulfment and allow rescue workers to remove the victim from that environment.  The rescue device is used in conjunction with rope and confined space rescue equipment.

Kansas University Fire Service Training has conducted grain engulfment training in Wellington for firefighters and grain elevator employees.  Firefighters in the county continue to attend these training sessions as they are offered.
