Sumner County Previews: It’s homecoming in Caldwell and South Sumner is looking for big win, Conway Springs faces improved Douglass, MORE
By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — A preview of tonight’s games across the Sumner County landscape:
Southeast Cherokee (1-1) at South Sumner (0-2)
It is homecoming in Caldwell tonight, and the Outlaws have a big game with the Southeast-Cherokee Lancers. Both teams are coming off tought losses. South Sumner fell to Olpe 48-0 last week, while Southeast Cherokee lost to Diamond, Mo., 42-6. The Outlaws were big winners last year, beating the southeast-based Kansas school 41-22. It was their last win until the final non-bracket game.
Conway Springs (1-1) at Douglass (1-1)
Douglass seems improved compared to years past. Last week, it fell to Marion 24-14 on the road. It won the week before over Whitewater-Remington 18-0.
Of course, Conway Springs may be in a mood, after losing to Garden Plain 33-14 last Friday, breaking a 25-game winning streak. The Owls not only won, but did so convincingly leading 25-6 at the half. The Cardinals dominated Douglass in 2024, 42-0.
Chaparral (2-0) at Belle Plaine (0-2)
This could be trouble for Belle Plaine. Chaparral defeated Medicine Lodge 34-21 last Friday after traveling to Kingman in week one and winning 23-7. Belle Plaine lost to the same Medicine Lodge team 36-14.
The losing streak is now at 14 games.
Oxford (2-0) at Central Burden (1-1)
This game is very intriguing. Central-Burden just got done beating Argonia-Attica in two overtimes, 22-20. Oxford has been rolling with a 48-0 win over Sedan and 58-6 win over West Elk. The Wildcats defeated Central 66-6 in 2024. That may not happen. Last year the Raiders were smoked by A&A 46-0 but won in two overtimes this year. Every year is a different story.
Argonia-Attica (1-1) at Cedar Vale-Dexter (1-1) – at Dexter
A&A had quite a contest last week in its double-overtime loss. It may have its work cut out for it against a Flint Hills region team. The Spartans are 2-0 with wins over Udall 54-0, and Flinthills 50-36. The South Central Border League is an intriguing league with no standout team emerging from the pack yet. Of course, A&A is technically an independent, but this is its third league opponent in a row. That’s three more than what South Sumner, a SCBL member, will play all season.
